Loving and teaching your children is a centerpiece of the mission of Eastminster. Our Children’s ministry staff and volunteers have built a line-up of fun classes and activities for your children to experience the love of Jesus Christ and to learn what it means to be His Child.
On Sunday mornings, we have a dedicated team prepared to care for your children and teach them about God, His creation, and His boundless love.
Christmas has taken on such a variety of meanings over the years. We have the story of Santa Claus; his elves and we cannot forget Rudolf… The most famous reindeer of all… This is such an exciting time of year, especially for families with little ones. There is nothing more fun than watching your child’s face light up as they help decorate the Christmas tree or drive by a Winter Wonderland taking “Deck the Halls” to a whole new level. During this time of year, it can be difficult to keep our eyes focused on what Christmas really means.
As parents, we must be intentional about restoring and maintaining the real Christmas story in the way we approach the season. How you choose to do this may depend on the ages of your children.
Here are few suggestions to of things you can do each day to help your children see beyond the toys and find joy that only comes from following Christ.
Morning Time: This month let your child wake up to, “Good morning! We’re one day closer to Jesus’ Birthday!” On Christmas Day, let your child wake up to, “Good morning! It’s Jesus’ Birthday! Happy Birthday, Jesus!” And…Oh by the way….a little bouncing on the bed together as you say “Happy Birthday, Jesus!” is totally appropriate!
Car Time: Tis the season to celebrate Jesus! You won’t have to look far, as you drive around our neighborhoods, to see signs of Christmas approaching. Look for things that remind you of the true story of Christmas and point them out to your child. See a star? Angel? Animals? Baby Jesus? Wise men? Hey, even decorations like twinkling lights can be a great reminder that Jesus is the “Light of the World”.
Don’t Miss Out on These Teachable Moments: You certainly don’t want to take away that sense of magic and joy that comes with the Christmas season, but also don’t fear taking advantage of the many teachable moments. Recognize how important your own spiritual example is to your children. The way in which you express and live out your faith has a greater impact on your children’s Christian walk than any other factor. So pray daily that God will help you become the person He wants you to become, so you can set the best example of faith in action for your kids. Make your relationship with God your top priority in life.
Cuddle Time: Grab my favorite book (The Bible) and snuggle in for a delightful read from Luke 2:1-20 (The Christmas Story). You can even use a Nativity scene (non-breakable) to help tell the story. I guarantee your kids will love it!
Live it out: If your children are older and already have a firm grasp on the story of Christ’s birth, it may be time to move on to sharing the gift of love that God gave the world by giving to others. How can my child give? Consider donating to AGAPE Way “Christmas in the Streets”. We will have a collection box set up here at Eastminster for all gift donations. Check our website or bulletin for more details but, this is a great way to teach our children the true meaning of Christmas when we shift our focus from “What will I get?” to “What can I give?”
